What/when did you study at Durham?

I received an MA degree in English/Arabic Translation and Interpreting graduating in 2009.

What are you doing now – employer and role?

After graduation I was employed as a lecturer in translation at Qassim University, Saudi Arabia, teaching translation & interpreting courses in different fields. In addition to my main role I also write for the Ofoq online newspaper and am a  translator licensed by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Commerce and Industry. I have also recently become a PhD fellow in the field of translation at Kent State University, USA which has been a fantastic experience so far.

What does your job involve?

My role at Qassim mainly involves planning lessons, teaching students and assessing their work. I also have various administrative responsibilities which have helped me to further develop a wide range of skills.

How did your time at Durham help you to succeed?

My experience in Durham University was really supportive starting from the classroom to the last page of my final project. It helped enhance the quality of learning and research skills. The professors were very supportive and available for study-related consultations. I met and made a lot of friends who are now pursuing very successful careers all over the world.

What advice would you give to current students?

I personally rate my experience at Durham University 10/10 and urge current students to be aware of the following points to benefit greatly from their time in Durham:

– Fantastic reputation both in the UK and internationally

– The City of Durham is surrounded by very beautiful green countryside

– The facilities were always available
– It has an amazing library
– The City’s historic features
– Quiet and peaceful

I keep telling my friends, “In Durham you can enjoy a very good quality of learning and life too.”
