Case study – Shambhavi Singh

What/when did you study at Durham?

I was enrolled in Durham University Business School‘s erstwhile MA Human Resource Management, now MSc Human Resource Management.

What are you doing now?

I work as a senior program manager at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

I previously worked with an international charity called Ark headquartered in London as a young professional in their India branch in Delhi. Ark’s YP program is a highly competitive program for high caliber, motivated young professionals.

What does your job involve?

I currently work for a national level scheme called National Mission on Higher Education around aspects of policy design, policy analysis, policy reform and project management. The scheme has a coverage of 29 states and 7 Union Territories in India. The scale and the impact of reform is huge.

How did your time at Durham help you to succeed?

I am currently working in a very international environment. The international environment at Durham definitely helped me in easily conversing with individuals from different parts of the world. Also, brand Durham resonated with my employers.

What advice would you give to current students?

I would advise them to choose careers where their passions lie. Technical skills can be built but passion comes from within. Also, they should keep an eye open for opportunities within the campus and outside. University offers many events where students come face to face with employers. Try and gain work experience while in university through internship programs and volunteer programs. In my student days I wrote for Durham University‘s online newspaper, Palatinate.

Case study – Samreen Khan

What/when did you study at Durham?

MA Marketing (2010-2011).

What are you doing now?

I am managing applications, admissions and marketing as UK Admissions & Marketing Manager, Pan-India at SI-UK Education Council (An Education, MNC focussed primarily on UK) at their Delhi office. I also work as a goodwill Ambassador for Durham University exclusively for SI-UK events.

What does your job involve?

My role is multifaceted and thus gives me a grander opportunity to explore myself each day. I am actively responsible for in-country applications for all three SI-UK offices; Delhi, Bangalore & Chennai, company marketing and liaising with external & internal partners, including International & admission officers from a large number of UK Universities. In addition, I look after business development for the company, which enables me to promote Higher Education, deliver presentations on the same in schools, colleges and education fairs; while I also work on new age media especially social media for the company.

Furthermore, as an International goodwill ambassador for Durham, I represent them at various events including fairs, tours and seminars held by SI-UK to meet prospective students and parents for imparting accurate information regarding courses and sharing first-hand experience of University with them.

How did your time at Durham help you to succeed?

My Durham degree has supported both, academically and qualitatively while the aura of the place creates an appetite for success in your persona, inevitably. The core concepts of planning effective marketing plans and implementing marketing strategies for business development for using at work were of a great support; while the compendium of skills gained while studying at Durham enhanced by overall portfolio altogether, making me equipped with a plethora of bents. The experience of interacting in a multicultural environment and indulging in a vast number of activities paved the way to a great learning platform each day.

What advice would you give to current students?

Focussing on your degree is desirable however making the most of your time at Durham is indispensable. Try new activities, get into clubs & societies, be an active participant and an all-rounder. Definitely, work in one of the colleges or with the University if given a chance, no matter even if it is just for a day! Be open to learning and criticism, be innovative, independent and teach yourself to mingle with anything and everything. A new place is always a great experience, both for self-learning and exploring.

Any other information you want to provide?

Do not give up easily. Take part in as many activities, events and fairs as possible. Do get hands on experience of working in the UK for sure and experience the work ethics there. Get all student discount cards and travel around the UK with friends and solo; balance study, work & travel and thereby gain a priceless experience for your lifetime.

Case study – Raja Singh

What are you doing now – employer and role?
I am  Chief Executive Officer of Crazy Ripples, which is a start-up consultancy and investment firm. Previously I worked as Director-Business Development in Codifier Technologies, New Delhi, India.

What does your job involve?
My role is broad and involves handholding entrepreneurs from idea stage to funding with all the business verticals included. Through the same, we have in our portfolio worked with – Liquii, Dance Out Of Poverty, EduCombine, Divya’s Closet, ProQore, Bar-O-Meeter, ServX (A Y-combinator invested company) amongst many others and currently are working on a physical 20,000 sq ft co-working and incubation space which shall allow us to bring in the best minds and mentors under one roof to build the innovation of tomorrow. At Codifier my job was to think out of the box and build my own product line, bring new clients (generate leads) and let the world know about At Codifier (Marketing) while leading a team and overseeing other verticals of the business as well.

How did your time at Durham help you to succeed?
Entrepreneurship is beyond books and Journals. The support from various professors namely: Dr. Graham Dietz, Ian Stone, Mat Hughes, Paul burrows, Karen Langdon, Pat Richardson. The initiatives such as Engineer and Business School meet, Startgrid, BluePrint Competition, KickStart Weekend, Master Class and best of all the opportunity to meet real entrepreneurs and alumni.

What advice would you give to current students?
If you wish to succeed in life, you have to be a rebel. Sitting back and waiting for opportunities to come your way won’t take you anywhere. Step out and ask, ask for help, question as many people as you can regarding what you should do and if you are on the right path. At the end, you are the one who has to make the move into the bigger picture.
My belief, “The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement, learning and trying should never stop because you only need to be right once so make as many mistakes untill then.”

Start looking around for opportunities as soon as possible, start deciding on what to do in life, you don’t need to be spot-on but at least have a strong starting point.

I’m a Government Consultant on the Graduate Program at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

What does your job involve?

Being a consultant at PwC involves plenty of research, report writing, networking, and on the job learning. Working with the Government team makes me feel quite fulfilled as our work indirectly changes the lives of the citizens and residents living in the Middle Eastern countries we work with.

How did your time at Durham help you to succeed?

Being surrounded by a body of motivated, determined men and women made me want to do the best I could. The desire for success is contagious at Durham and I’m very glad I had three great years to learn as much as I possibly could from the people around me.

What advice would you give to current students?

Don’t let your degree get in the way of your education. Try new activities, go to the talks and debates that Durham’s societies organise. Be confident in who you are but be open to learning new things and self-discovery. Only then will you find what will make you truly happy!

Arif moves into Strategic Planning

I come from New Delhi, India. Prior to beginning my Masters degree at the University of Durham, I had already obtained a Bachelors of Commerce Honours Degree from the University of Delhi, India, followed by some years of work experience in Product Marketing with a global life sciences company.

I chose to study at Durham University Business School for several reasons. First, while researching courses I found the Marketing Masters to be a very well structured programme featuring a wide variety of modules. These not only provided an extensive coverage of marketing, but also an exposure to concepts in business strategy, management decision making, organizational behavior, business economics and accounting. Second, the profile of the teaching staff seemed very impressive, they were highly experienced and qualified, and therein most of them had several research publications. Finally, Durham is a very beautiful and peaceful city, and the university is the third oldest in England, so is steeped in tradition and history.

When I arrived in Durham, my experience far exceeded my expectations, and the one-year I spent there ended up being very rewarding. I made some wonderful friends, saw some breathtaking places, and thoroughly enjoyed the entire year. Towards the end of the academic year, I had seven distinctions and two merit-grades on my nine modules; a distinction on the corporate-sponsored research dissertation; and an award for the ‘best academic performance’ on the programme. That was not all; my dissertation supervisor even agreed to co-author a research paper with a fellow student and me.

I believe, if you organise your time effectively, besides the rich academics, there are many extra curricular activities to pursue alongside studying. I participated in the University’s Blueprint Business Plan competition. The business venture made it to the final round of the University-level stage of the competition. I co-founded and was the Secretary of one of the South Asian Societies at Ustinov College. I also participated and stood 2nd in the Strategic Marketing competition organised by Durham Business School in coordination with Market2Win Ltd. This allowed me to secure work experience with the company working directly with the Managing Director, which later led to my contribution on a case study in his recently released book ‘Marketing Navigation’.

After studying on the Masters in Marketing programme, I developed an interest in Strategic Marketing and Business Strategy and was keen to work in a related area. St. Jude Medical offered the perfect role in Strategic Planning. It being a medical devices company, also presented the right opportunity to leverage on my previous work experience in life sciences.

The selection process was tough and had several rounds of screening, which comprised of a written application, a telephone interview, two face-to-face skills based personal interviews, an HR Manager interview and a personal interview with the Country Head.

In my current role I enjoy a great amount of variety due to a dual function nature of my job. My primary function entails conceptualisation, planning, development and implementation of major strategic programmes in Therapy Development targeted towards improving therapy awareness, access, affordability and adoption. My secondary responsibilities involve taking initiatives to reach out to top-level health insurance stakeholders to develop synergies and obtain coverage for therapy reimbursement in India.

I would say that the Durham experience taught me the much-needed thoroughness, attention to detail, workplace maturity and patience. My teachers at Durham have prepared my mind to think more maturely and strategically on day-to-day business problems. Moreover, the multicultural learning experience at Durham prepared me to value varied opinions and ideas. Advice from the Careers, Employability and Enterprise Centre was also very valuable in helping me to focus my CV effectively and prepare for job interviews.

The takeaway from the Durham experience varies from person to person. My advice to current and future students is to introspect their purpose of studying on a Masters programme and work hard.

 I was part of the MSc Finance and Investment class of 2005 and graduated in 2006. Subsequently I joined Deloitte, the professional services firm. I spent 3 years with Deloitte and found it to be a fantastic place to work in. I was promoted to the position of Assistant Manager in Audit and completed the ACA qualification. Subsequent to this, I decided to seek a new challenge and moved to Barclays Capital, the investment banking wing of Barclays Bank in London, as an Analyst in FX Exotics Risk. My work is largely based around analysing the macro economic factors and looking at how they affect the positions of various trading desks.

The first time I applied to Deloitte, my application was rejected. This prompted me to visit the Careers Employability and Enterprise Centre to find out what the issue was. What I found was that while I had a broad range of skills from my various experiences, including the very fact that I was in a country different to mine and that I managed to get involved in part time jobs/extra curricular activities, I was failing to put them across convincingly in my application. This may have been primarily because in India, we use the CV to apply for a job while in the UK the employers place a lot of importance on the application to draw out specific examples of traits that they look for. While I did have those traits, the examples that I used were not good enough to convince the employers that I had them. I was able to correct this by making use of the Careers Centre and attending recruitment events of potential employers.

I also gained contacts at various companies by attending recruitment events organised by the Centre. They were able to guide me in exactly what the firms were looking for. I also realised that potential employers expect you to have a good understanding of what the role you are applying towards entails. Conversations with people who are already doing what you want to do are crucial in this regard.

The opportunities for international students from outside the EU are limited because of the fact that they need work permits which the employer needs to obtain on their behalf. From my experience, only the big employers usually get you this. Also since the time I joined Deloitte, the economic/political environment has changed and I would imagine there is pressure on the number of graduate places/work permits available. But the fact remains that there are opportunities for people who show potential. Firms place a lot of importance on diversity and regularly employ students from outside the EU. They obtain work permits for those who require them. However due to the limited number of places and because of the time involved in getting a work permit you should apply as early as possible.

I can say that for both my employers the work challenges you and what you believe you are capable of. You are driven and pushed to be the best you can be. However, ultimately, it will be your interest in what you do (or want to do!) and your passion to excel that will differentiate you from others. This is true from my experience and I am sure this will be the case in your application too!
